scenario planning FRAMEWORK

Our service is aimed at providing a full global database for future thinking capable of being focused for a particular industry or skill (discipline) in a particular region or country. The database structure is based on:

  • The North American Industry Classification system (NAICS) applied globally to all economies
  • Standard Competency and Professional classifications from the International Labor Organization (ILO)
  • The TOP 100 Recognized Management Tools
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs
  • Standard Environmental Risk categories

The system sends out more than 1,500 probes for the latest information from sources such as:

  • The Internet via Google Advanced Search
  • Proprietary trends databases
  • Partners' databases

The system returns, on average, more than 7,500 'future events' for each topic searched. It filters and focuses these to the 200 most relevant to the requirements for a particular search, based on criteria selected by the client.

In this way, the user can be confident that their future scanning covered most of the relevant data in a manner that is easily replicated and easily refreshed.

Current issues in the Middle East cause Futurists to revisit history to understand how we got to where we are. This map of the Roman Empire is from Wikimedia Commons

The regions of Libya are shown in Wikimedia Commons as above.

TYPICAL FUTURE EVENT DRIVERS

There have been many events which will have a dramatic impact on the future for most industries and governments. Typical major topics are:

  • The Political upheavals currently under way in the Middle East
  • Economic overconsumption: driven by unusual monetary and fiscal policies
  • Global warming: now recognised as a serious threat
  • Pervasive Internet: now recognised as a major benefit
  • Pervasive Telecoms: now recognised as a major benefit
  • Rapidly expanding understanding of the human brain: 95% of what we know has been discovered since the year 2000.

A comprehensive study of more than 400 future trends and technologies has been published by the futurist Richard Watson (see www.nowandnext.com) in his book "Future Files - A Brief History of the Next 50 Years" (see www.futuretrendsbook.com). We scan all of these trends and technologies and present the results in our workshops. An excerpt from the graphic display of the trends map is shown below.
